The Freeport Community Foundation is proud to support the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). YAC was formed in 2009 and is comprised of area youth who are dedicated to leadership and philanthropy. Throughout the year, members develop leadership skills while being introduced to grant writing, fund raising and community foundation best practices. YAC members then apply these skills to review youth-serving grant requests and select which projects will be awarded. YAC members’ fund-raising efforts help to determine the total grant funds available.
In 2017, YAC awarded four grants:
- Children’s Hands On Museum (two grants) for their Imagination Lab and Inside Out Games
- Northern Illinois Food Bank for its Backpack Program
- Senior Resource Center for the Hands 2 Hands Intergenerational Program
YAC presents a CARE Award each year to an area teacher epitomizing the spirit of philanthropy. The 2017 award recipient was: Barbara Flynn, Aquin Catholic Schools. Ms. Flynn chose the Aquin Servant Leadership program as the recipient of the award in her honor.
