The Freeport Community Foundation is proud to support the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). YAC was formed in 2009 and is comprised of area youth who are dedicated to leadership and philanthropy. Throughout the year, members develop leadership skills while being introduced to grant writing, fund raising and community foundation best practices. YAC members then apply these skills to review youth-serving grant requests and select which projects will be awarded. YAC members’ fund-raising efforts help to determine the total grant funds available.
In 2018, YAC awarded four grants:
- CareerTEC for its Computer Information Systems Certifications
- Children’s Hands On Museum for its Sensory Delight program
- Northern Illinois Food Bank for its Backpack Program
- The Food Ark for The Food Ark Garden
YAC presents a CARE Award each year to an area teacher epitomizing the spirit of philanthropy. The 2018 award recipient is Dr. Beth Summers, Freeport School Dist. #145. Dr. Summers chose Children’s Hands On Museum as the recipient of the award in her honor.
